The UN Refugee Agency Event

Dear Members,

Belgian Youth Diplomacy has the pleasure to invite you to our next event at the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) on the 23rd of March at 2pm.

Topics such as asylum seekers, refugees, resettlements and integration will be part of the agenda. These sensitive topics has been at various European and international Institutions’ Agenda. Since the high peak of refugees in 2015, various world wide stakeholders were engage to help migrants and refugees in the resettlement battle. UNHCR is one of the very important stakeholder which aims to protect refugees by finding long-terms solutions and assist in their integration or resettlement in another country.

Created in 1950, UNHCR has been involved in many refugees crises, amongst other helping with providing critical emergency assistance to the most needy.

The Headquarters of the UNHCR are located at 283 Avenue Louise, 1050 Brussels. For this event, Ms. Melanie Recour will be our guide during the meeting. She is working in the Public Information Department and will explain us the UNHCR’s work through concrete actions.

For security reasons we will need to enter as a group, so please be on time. Latecomers will not be able to enter the building. At 13h40, BYD team will wait in front of the building before entering.

Visit to the World Bank Group

Dear Members,

After a short break during the Christmas holidays, the Belgian Youth Diplomacy Team has the pleasure to invite your to our next event which will take place at the World Bank Group on the 22nd February at 15h40.

It will be an opportunity to get an overview of the history, goals and governance of the World Bank Group (WBG), as well as areas of engagement – including youth employment.

Visit to the South Korean Embassy

Dear Members,

The tensions between North and South Korea have reached an unseen height in modern history. The nuclear tests of the North Korean regimes have caused a shockwave in the international community. USA has replied with strong language and more military support in that region. South Korea on the other hand pledges for more dialogue and fears an escalation of this conflict into a new Korean war.

To better understand the relationship between North and South Korea, a visit to the South Korean embassy will be organized on 6 December from 15h till 16h. The embassy of South Korea will welcome BYD members for an informative discussion and a guiding tour in their premises.

Event at the Committee of the Regions

Dear Members,

The regionalist tendencies are an upcoming trend in Europe. Recently, Catalonia held a referendum to express its wish to be independent. These tendencies spread out more and more through out Europe. Others such as Flanders, Corsica, the Basque Country, Lombardic region, claim for more autonomy. The Committee of the Region (CoR), is an EU institution that represents the interests of the regions and cities. The Committee was created in 1994, their main focus is to bring the European Union closer to its citizens. Therefore, they support the regionalist governments on all major issues of local and regional relevance.

As an advisory body, the CoR works closely with the European Parliament in order to facilitate the cohesion and the integration of European cities and regions in the EU.

To better understand this interaction, a visit to the Committee of the Regions will be organized on 23 November 2017 at 14h. The CoR will welcome BYD’s members for an informative discussion and a guiding tour in their premises.

LEAD SESSION – Meet & Greet – Conference with Nicolas Michel (former UN Under-Secretary-General) – 12th March

The Belgian Youth Diplomacy team is honored to share with you information about a conference organized by the LEAD Session. LEAD is the acronym of ‘Leaders d’Espérance, Ambition pour Demain’ (Leaders of Hope, Ambition for tomorrow).

This conference hosts a prestigious speaker: Nicolas Michel, former Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs and United Nations Legal Counsel at the United Nations.

The conference will take place on the 12th March in the evening in Brussels. Nicolas Michel will provide the participants a testimony of his professional and personal background within the UN institutions, his decisions, his challenges as well as the difficulties that he faced during his career.

Brussels Model European Union – Applications are open ! – Deadline : 13 March 2017

Dear former and current BYD members,

The Belgian Youth Diplomacy team is delighted to share with you information about the next Brussels Model European Union.

Brussels MEU 2017 has finally set up the dates and has opened its applications. Do not miss this opportunity to debate and discuss amendments as well as propositions !
The deadline to apply is the 13th March 2017.

Please find below the relevant information regarding this event:

BMEU dates: 1-6th May 2017

Venue: Committee of the Regions and Royal Library of Belgium

Number of participants: up to 150

Committees: European Parliament, Council of the EU, European Council + journalists

Topics: Copyright in the Digital Single Market: 2016/0280 (COD) and Common European Asylum System: 2016/0224 (COD) for the EP and CoEU, The Common Security and Defence Policy for the EC.

Fee: No participation fee. However, the accepted participants will have to pay a deposit fee of 30 EUR, which will be returned in cash during the event.

Travelling: if you are coming from a partner country (which all of you are), BMEU will partially refund your travel tickets – more info on that at this website

Food: Lunches will be covered from Tuesday to Friday. Coffee breaks will be covered during the sessions.
